Surfaces functionalization through machining and burnishing processes to improve biomedical implants tribocorrosion.

Unical deals with titanium alloy (grade 5) permanent prostheses focusing on hip prostheses where the stem and neck components are usually made of titanium. In particular, the neck can be machined and then worked with the burnishing process to increase its resistance.

Therefore, an experimental campaign was carried out to evaluate which burnishing parameters effectively improve the material behaviour, and then an equipment suitable for a fatigue machine was also designed to perform fretting corrosion fatigue tests on hip prostheses necks machined with the burnishing process.
