Stemming from the support of multiple EC and MUR funding sources, our recently inaugurated Smart Manufacturing Laboratory is dedicated to studying AI applications in next-gen manufacturing. Our current main interest is the development of smart material extrusion (MEX) additive manufacturing machines: by combining on-machine multi-sensing (including vision), adaptive control, and bio-inspired artificial intelligence, we develop prototypes to investigate concepts such as machine self-awareness, data-driven autonomous learning, and model-assisted reasoning supported by digital shadows and twins. Our goal is to implement next-gen solutions for in-process monitoring, control and real-time optimisation/recovery. In addition to supporting the development of MEX prototypes, our lab features state-of-the-art technology to measure surfaces (confocal, focus variation, interferometry), form (fringe projection, photogrammetry), and soon volumes (XCT) for quality inspection of additively manufactured parts.
