The Manufacturing Technology Group (MTG) at the University of Palermo firmly believes that manufacturing processes represent the foundation upon which strategies for Circular Economy and Industrial Symbiosis (IS) can be built. Within the research activities funded by the National Center for Sustainable Mobility (MICS – PNRR), MTG is developing research lines focused on both the recycling of process waste and the reuse of end-of-life metal components through reshaping techniques. The first approach involves the adoption of efficient recycling techniques based on solid bonding mechanics, aimed at transforming metallic chips into semi-finished products (billets and wires), which are subsequently characterized and employed in further downstream processes (WAAM, forging, SPD) in an IS-oriented framework. The second approach concerns the use of flexible sheet metal forming processes to reshape end-of-life sheet components, reintroducing them into the production cycle without remelting.
