AITeM Laser Safety School courses - Course for laser safety officers

COURSE FOR LASER SAFETY OFFICERS [40 H] (ESPERTO SICUREZZA LASER - II, CEI 76-17 STANDARD)

Laser Safety Officers are qualified professionals capable of carrying out laser risk assessment in accordance with Legislative Decree 81/08 and subsequent amendments, with the aim of eliminating or reducing such risk in the workplace. They are able to define and select appropriate prevention and protection measures and to verify the class of a laser product. The Laser Safety Officers may operate in industrial, research, telecommunications and civil applications, or in the medical, aesthetic and veterinary fields, following specific training.

Although the tasks required for safety purposes in the two fields are largely comparable, the detailed knowledge needed for risk assessment, the related controls and the procedures to be followed depend in part on the type of sources used, the specific work activity and the working environment.

The training programme consists of 40 hours, of which 4 are dedicated to the specific application field. It is possible to cover both fields with a total duration of 44 hours.

The topics covered, in summary, concern in-depth study of the fundamentals of laser physics and their interaction with materials and biological tissues, the legislative and regulatory framework (Directive 2006/25/EC; Legislative Decree 81/08; IEC EN CEI 60825 standards, UNI EN ISO 207 and 208 standards; etc.), classification of laser sources, criteria and methodologies for risk assessment (including the determination of hazard zones), exposure limits, technical and organisational prevention and protection measures, selection and sizing of personal protective equipment, safety procedures, operational checks and verifications, as well as specific applications for different fields of use.

At the end of the programme, the Laser Safety Officer will be the specialist reference figure in the field of laser safety, capable of conducting quantitative risk analyses, applying models and calculations for the estimation of exposure and for the determination of safe conditions. They will therefore be able to quantify risk and correctly define mitigation measures (such as safety distances, shielding and personal protective equipment), operating with a structured technical-engineering approach.

The course will be delivered online for the first 32 hours. The final 8 hours, including a case study with a practical example and the final examination, will take place in person at Politecnico di Milano, Bovisa campus.

The cost of the 40 h course is €1500 per person. The cost of the 44 h course is €1650 per person. Prices are exclusive of 22% VAT for non AITeM members.

At the end of the course, subject to passing the final examination, participants will receive a certificate of attendance and successful completion, in accordance with Legislative Decree 81/2008 and subsequent amendments, in compliance with the applicable regulations.
