The STELLAR project (Sustainable Roll-to-Roll Production of Lithium-Metal Anodes for Next Generation Batteries) addresses a key challenge for EU energy sovereignty: industrializing high-performance LiM anodes for solid-state batteries (Gen 4b/4c) and lithium-sulfur (Gen 5). STELLAR develops an innovative roll-to-roll PVD process to produce ultra-thin, pure, and stable LiM anodes, building on and upgrading AVESTA’s infrastructure. Planned activities include evaporation and sputtering optimization, equipment upgrades, advanced monitoring, and AI-based automation. The Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI), through the SITEC Laser Applications Lab, will design precision laser micro-cutting of LiM in controlled atmosphere. STELLAR will also introduce a digital twin for process optimization and circular strategies to enhance recycling and lithium recovery. The consortium brings together 16 partners: industrials AVESTA, AGC, COMAU, HSSMI; research centers CSEM, CID, CEIT, IKERLAN, Fraunhofer, UNITO, POLIMI; and INOVA+ for communication. With TRL7 and an EU pilot line, STELLAR will reinforce Europe’s leadership in sustainable batteries.
