Additive manufacturing (AM) features enabling technologies for the Space Economy due to their ability to produce lightweight components with high thermo-mechanical performance. However, the geometric complexity and the use of advanced materials make the qualification phase of printed products critical. Coordinated by Politecnico di Milano and funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) under the AO10042 agreement, the "Italy for Additive Manufacturing in SPACE" (IAMSPACE) project involves research institutions and companies to explore the great potential of online monitoring techniques for product qualification during the printing process. Thanks to the use of innovative sensors and new machine learning solutions for data (images, videos), the project represents an important step towards a new generation of intelligent AM systems capable of supporting the zero-defect manufacturing paradigm.
