AITeM Observatories at MECSPE

Once again this year, AITeM will contribute to MECSPE, the leading exhibition for the manufacturing industry, taking place in Bologna from 4 to 6 March 2026. On Friday 6 March, two sessions will be delivered by the two AITeM Observatories, dedicated respectively to Artificial Intelligence and Sustainability. For AITeM, the Observatories represent a national benchmark for monitoring and fostering cultural growth on topics of broad relevance to the Association. They promote a sector-wide vision of technologies, systems, and processes from a strategic, systemic perspective, generating knowledge and contributing to the debate by analyzing emerging trends and future developments. In line with AITeM’s mission, the Observatories encourage dialogue and stimulate exchange between the research community and industry.

The first presentation will be delivered by Prof. Luigi Nele of Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, Coordinator of the AITeM Observatory on the Impact of Artificial Intelligence in the Manufacturing Sector. The Observatory was established with the aim of analyzing and monitoring the adoption of Artificial Intelligence technologies within the national manufacturing system. It supports the dissemination of AI-based solutions in production processes while promoting technology transfer and training on AI applications in manufacturing. Its main activities include mapping existing applications, collecting case studies, and analyzing companies’ technological and training needs, with particular attention to the energy impact and computational requirements associated with the growing use of AI systems in industrial contexts.

The second session will be led by Prof. Paolo C. Priarone of Politecnico di Torino, Coordinator of the AITeM Observatory on the Sustainability of Production Technologies and Systems. This Observatory focuses on the study and promotion of industrial and technological practices aimed at responsible resource use, production process optimization, and the integration of environmental, economic, and social dimensions throughout the entire product life cycle. With the objective of generating actionable knowledge and supporting the development of sustainability strategies aligned with Industry 5.0 principles, the Observatory’s activities are grounded in a systemic vision that considers the full life cycle of products and manufacturing systems—from raw material sourcing to production and use, through to end-of-life phases, including reuse, repair, de- and remanufacturing, and recycling, in line with circular economy principles. At the same time, preventive strategies such as redesign and consumption reduction are promoted to minimize impacts across the entire production flow. Through its initiatives, the Observatory fosters the sharing of data, methodologies, and best practices, and invites companies and stakeholders to actively contribute to building sustainable transition pathways.

The event will open with remarks by Prof. Antonino Squillace of Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, President of AITeM, who will present the Association and its activities. This will provide an opportunity to highlight AITeM’s role as a catalyst between academia, research centers, and industry, strengthening its position as a reference point for technological innovation and sustainability in Italian manufacturing.

The session will take place on Friday 6 March, at the Arena Additive (Hall 36 – Stand D72) from 12:00 to 1:00 PM.
