The Manufacturing Technologies Research Laboratory (MTRL) within the Department of Industrial Engineering of the University of Florence conducts research on advanced manufacturing technologies, with a focus on machining and Additive Manufacturing. Research activities integrate experimental investigations, numerical modelling, and process monitoring to establish relationships between process parameters and manufactured components properties.
The laboratory infrastructure includes two 5-axis CNC machining centres, one of which is a hybrid machine capable of integrating Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) and milling within the same setup, a CNC turning centre, Cartesian and robotic WAAM deposition systems, together with access to facilities for mechanical testing and advanced materials characterisation (SEM, EBSD, and X-ray Computed Tomography (CT)).
