In the context of the European research project GigaGreen, various activities are being carried out with the aim of developing innovative methods to improve the efficiency of lithium-ion batteries for industrial applications.
The core of the research activity is represented by the analysis, both experimental and based on finite element simulations, of the potential of surface functionalization using nano or femtosecond lasers. In particular, the creation of sub-micrometric structures using laser sources significantly increases the contact surface area between the substrate and the active electrode material, reducing the material's stress compared to perfectly flat surfaces.
The result is an electrode characterized by greater adhesion and an extended lifespan.
The results obtained are of fundamental importance both from a mechanical perspective and for the sustainability of lithium-ion batteries.
